What kind of board do you ride and why do you ride it?

I've been in a super surfing state of mind (more than usual) as of late and got to wondering about this. What makes a person want to ride a longboard over a shortboard or vice versa. Is it something personal, peer pressure or some mystical cosmic reason? How about you guys: What kind of board do you ride and why do you ride it?

O.K..used to be a full on short-boarder. Had a 6'4" Garduque squash tail. Used to love that board! Rode it in everything from 2'-6'. Then life came along and kicked my ass. Sold the board, walked away from surfing completely. At least, I thought so. I would still read the mags, watch the vids, stroll through the surf stores and gaze longingly at the boards... 3 years pass...
One day a friend at work decided to give me a board. Said, 'get back out there son." Pulled up to his house and he slides me a brand new Barbera 9'6" longboard. Told me it was the last board this guy shaped before splitting to the mainland. A drop dead 3 stringer piece of art. 3 1/4 thick, soft rails all the way to the back 2 feet where it gets hard. One of those boards you just love to run your hands down. Board turns on a dime, pulls in nicely. Not really a nose rider, but easy as pie cutbacks and tons of control on floaters. This board brought me back to the water, the waves and the barrel. As I've gotten a little soft around the rails myself, it gives me a little bit of edge over the 16 year old competition, but I make sure I'm not the dick in the water snagging every wave. Sometimes I miss the straight up and down re-entry, but aside from that, I love that board!!!

I usually ride a 9'0" longboard that I shaped. It has a 17" nose, 22" wide, 14" round pin. Single fin, soft low rails. I also use a 6'4" fish that I shaped, but generally use the longboard. I guess at my age, 47, youre going more for ease of use than performance. I like the glide and have been honing my cross stepping and noseriding skills on the longboard and have fun with the snaps, off the lips and floaters when using my shortboard. I've been lucky that I havent had any problems going back and forth between the long and short boards.

    My board...

I currently ride a 9'7" single finbox board that's fairly light-weight and only 2 3/4" thick. I did shape this board, and I'm waiting for my latest shaped 9'6" classic nose rider design to come back from the glassers. I'm into gliding, cruising, smooth turns, nose riding, trimming etc. I really can't surf most boards shorter than 7' long. There's just something about a classic style single fin longboard!

  5. Howzit, newbie here. I just purchased my first longboard. shaped by infinty , its a 9'6 stylemaster , classic style single fin. I still ride a shorty and a bodyboard, according my mood or conditions when im out. I dont have the luxury to be picky since I can only get to the ocean every 2 weeks or so and only a couple of days at that.

    I typically surf two boards.

My 9'6" is my favorite board for most of the year. I love long boarding and can get pretty nasty on that big girl. I surf it anywhere from 1.5 feet to 8 feet waves.

My 6'10' board I ride from 6 feet and up, so in fla. it doesn't get much action But it hauls butt and is a great wave carving board. I may ride it in smaller stuff if its barrelling! Surf on!

I have 8 boards from 5'9"-9"0" . I find myself mostly riding a 6'1"x18.5x2.5 rounded pin. I feel more comfortable with a board I can duck dive. It's magic. Easy to turn and maneuver.

SWEEET!!!!! God I wanna get to Maui! Hopefully soon. I'll let you know..a 9'0...perfect!!

  12. I got an 8' shaped in J Bay - mini mal - easy for me to use as I only get to the ocean once a month (if I am lucky), unless I am travelling, in which case its most days. Just been on a trip through Central and South America with this board - it was probably the best board to take (bearing in mind that I was backpacking and didn't want to take more than one board). I managed to ride most waves, from 1.5 foot to 2.5-3 times overhead, with no problems, whereas the dudes I travelled with both had short boards and in the smaller waves, they struggled to have fun, while the 8' cruised.

I also got a 7' "gun", but I hardly use that - its more of a short board for me as I am about 6'4". Probably going to pass it on and get me a 7'-7'2 fish. Heading to indo in a couple of months, so got to get it the boards sorted out.
    Bang on !

    What kind of board

Right now I am riding a 9'0" Rasta board but I'm passing that one down to my daughter because I'm having a new board made...same size 9'0", 22". I can't wait to go pick it up!
I'll send a picture of my newest baby when I get it. I also have a 7'6" funboard. And last but certainly not least, my 42"BZ boogie which I have had now for something like 21 years. It's getting a little battered, and the thought of getting a new sponge has crossed my mind but I can't part with my BZ.

9'6" Randy Cone. Classic shape w/ more rocker than you'd expect. Its a good all around board that noserides well and can still handle 8' waves. Single fin.

7'10" Andreini. 70's style single fin that really starts working at head-high.

9'2" Wayne Rich "60's classic". Brand new, picked it up today. Pretty flat, good amount of concave, classic pintail. Single fin, of course. Can't wait to ride it.

    Mine

Usually, I ride 9'0" Bruce Jones Custom High performance with tri fins for beach break, 9'0"BJ custm high performance with single box for point break, or 9'0"BJ custom modern with concave, pin-tail, and tri fins for point break.
But use 9'6" Tyler surfboard classic nose rider to get real feeling of grooving back to my soul.

    Sometime, 6'2" Mcrystal.

Feeling, when I noseride, keeps me back to longboard.

    Anyway, Mahalo

    godfather360,
it goes from $350-$600 in manila our countries capital.but if your lucky enuf some expats going back to thier country of origin who wouldn't like to go thru the same crap of carrying his board back, would sell it to you for a cheaper price!!!lately, for the past 3 years we've been bless by donations of used boards from australia!they get together all those used boards ship to the Phils and distribute it to all the local surf clubs(who has a good standing, meaning:club who we're given boards back then should not sell thier boards in return)so,among the local club we police our selves!!"MABUHAY" to the people of oz!!!all they've done is highly appreciated here!!

Nice board Rastro! And your kids are cute too

I haven't visited this forum in forever, but couldn't resist responding to a "what kind of board" thread.

I love my boards... I've got an 8'1" CC Rider mini-longboard and a 9'oh Allison Classic. The Allison is my main board and I take it out almost every time. The CC Rider was my main board for almost 3 years, but now serves as my "big wave" board... you know when the surf is too dumpy for a real longboard, something a bit smaller can usually make it (usually).

My Allison is a classic noserider. Nice and wide, not TOO thick with a rounded pin tail. Wish I could give some dimensions, but I don't know them right off my head. I've got a 9" Wingnut cutaway fin in it, and I've been a fan of that style fin for a long time. I've got one just like it but 2" smaller on the CC rider. For me, it makes for easier manueverability, even though when I first tried that style, it was way too swirly for me. Finally I have control!!

Anyway, the Allison is perfect for me, and it really is a beauty. Lovely Hawaiian cloth inlaid on the entire right side of the deck and the Will Allison logo on the left side... a seahorse It's beautiful, it rides great, and I LOVE IT!!

Anyone in Florida (anywhere east coast) interested in buying a softboard? I have a 6'0" Morey Ripper that I bought for my youngest, but she has gone through a major growth spurt (good thing because I was beginning to think she had some sort of growth disorder). Anyway she has outgrown the board physically and mentally and wants to graduate up. It is a good little beginner board for a child and is in perfect condition. For more specs see: http://www.waveblasters.com/82000.html

  24. what board do you ride and why

longboard cause i like the glide,9 ft allison cause he shapes his boards for east coast and they are great boards.

    Current Favorites

9-0 Wave Tools shaped by Lance Collins. 3-stringers and volan cloth give nice heft. Gunny out line & diamond tail with copious V for juicy loosey even at speed. Usually ride it as a single fin but it has the side biters. Likes to be pressed into deep botom turns and pulled in deep and steep. Very forgiving exagerated rocker.

9-4 Trestles Special shaped by Rich Harbour. The oldest board of my favorites is still very versatile and provides better paddling and nose riding than my 9-0. I love that board. Again 3-stringers and Volan cloth.

10-0 Surfboards by Velzy shaped and signed by Dale. Number 79 out of 101 made. 5-stringers and enough Volan cloth to make my truck ride smoother. Out-line and rails perty much like in 1961 but maybe a bit more rocker. No leash and waxed-up with parafin. Why do ya think I ride it? 'Cause it feels so damd good! It's also the prittiest surfboard I have ever seen. I should just hang it on the wall but I can't leave it alone!

These 3 are monopolizing my water time at present but Im allways lookin for that next magic board.
    Just another day in Geezerdise
