Hey there girl Glad to see you are back! I finally found the time to give this site what it deserves, a nice new modern upgrade. I am sad to hear about your surf accident! What happened?

Oh I thought you knew about that... I was having the best day of my then-brief surfing life and kept taking "just one more wave" and ended up tired and surfing the inside shallows. I wasn't paying attention and I hit a patch of mini rip current that knocked me off my board and I landed HARD in about 1 foot of water. It wasn't pretty! All I remember was that my ankle bent back on itself to the point where my ankle touched my outer leg, yeah, nice visual huh?! And after that all I remember was unleashing a series of profanity that must have been heard up and down the beach because a crowd gathered and it was dawn patrol and the life guards had to be called because they weren't on duty yet. Ended up with an alleged clean break, in a cast for 2 months, walking boot 2 more, lots of rehab and a year later still having really bad intermittent nerve pain in my ankle. Had surgery to remove floating bone fragments, and clean up a divet that was in my ankle bone joint from the hard impact of the accident. Was fine until about 1 year ago and now I have the intermittent nerve pain randomly. The truth is, I wouldn't risk hurting my ankle even more than it already has been hurt at this point. I went out a few times after I healed but I'm too scared to screw it up again to actually get back out there and surf again. Sad, but true. I value being able to at least walk fairly normally most of the time! And I know that if you surf timidly, you will probably hurt yourself so...

All that aside, we were down at the beach last night watching the last of a big swell that passed through SD yesterday and there was some awesome set waves rolling in. I still watch, just don't 'do' anymore. That's the long story. If you know anyone who wants to buy a nearly new Motherlode longboard that is an awesome ride, let me know. I need to let it go already!

    See you around these parts...

I am sad to hear about your accident. Must totally suck to not be able to do what you love!!!
Have you ever tried an Indo Board? My mother broke her foot 12 years ago when she was surfing and thought that she would never be able to surf again. She had difficulties walking. She was recommended an Indo Board balance trainer and that got her surfing again. She is now surfing better than ever! Maybe you should give it a go?

Wow I am so sorry about your accident and I hope that you can find some way to get some relief from your pain and maybe get back in the water. What about a body board? My friend gave up surfing about 10 years ago and does strictly body boarding now, she is really good, has won several contests and is actually sponsored by a BB company. She says the stoke is better than surfing stand up style.

(((((((schwa))))))))! How ya been?!? Still living in sunny Florida these days? What's new with you?

Yeah, you know, I never thought about body boarding to be honest, thanks for the idea. I rehabbed quite a long time over both the original and surgery episodes but really, I'm glad to be walking most of the time without any pain. It's just random intermittent crap. But body boarding, now there's a great idea! Not sure I'm willing to ensure dawn patrol over that but...worth a think and a try. What sort of board would one use for that? I have some cheapo crappy boogie boards from eons ago...have they changed much? I'll have to check it out. Thanks schwa...

PS: I feel like we're at a camp reunion or something! Man, when The Glide was originally hopping in early 2000 or so, the internet was quite a different place than it is now, huh? If AquaBoy shows up, I'm gonna feel like all is right with the world again...!

Its all about the stoke and enjoying yourself. You should try body boarding Did you checkout the indo board?

Yes the internet has indeed changed a lot! But I think when it comes to a niche site like The Glide no facebook'ish site can compare. Each site has its own purpose. Would be awesome to get the original vibe going here. Also if anyone wants to contribute some editorial content or start blogging here the new version allows this to be done easily
Does anyone have AquaBoys e-mail? The address he has linked to his account here isn't active. So he isn't getting any notifications

Yep still living in Florida and while it's sunny it is also really cold the last few weeks, like down into the 30s! Break out the arctic wetsuit! I don't know much about bodyboarding except that the boards range from the cheapo kiind you get at a convenience store to a few hundred dollars. I've thought about trying it, just think, you never have to worry about getting clocked on the head buy a huge chunk of fiberglass! I know that people really like it because they feel closer to the wave and in more of a union with the ocean, that's what I've heard anyways. Let me know how you like it!

Ditto. It's good, I think, to change up your vehicle every once in a while. If you have enough flex in your foot, you might want to consider a kneeboard. I have one really messed up rotator cuff and despite lots of PT, every so often I do something that tweaks it in a bad way and I simply can't paddle with that arm. That's when I break out my 25 year old morey sponge! Yeah, I gots no shame! I don't want to be kept out of the water and I actually dig the different perspective I get on the wave lying down. I might even go Greenough and get a surf mat one of these days! As far as getting a sponge, you can lay out hundreds of dollars on a Mike Stewart or other "high-end" sponge or, you can scan your local Craigslist and score a decent BZ or Morey for super cheap. Either way, I bet you'll have fun!
