I surfed during this swell even though the High Surf Advisory was in effect. I surfed at a place called "Populars" in Waikiki with 4 - 6 ft waves. On June 5th, a "life-shock incident" happened to me while I was trying to get away from the surf break area. An inexperienced surfer caught a wave that already broke and was riding the broken wave. I was about 20 ft in front of him and saw him riding the wave. He could not control his board and came towards me. I waved at him and told him to turn away from me, but he came to my direction. I knew that he was going to collide with me so I ducked into the water and flipped my 9' 4" Yater longboard. That incident, I heard a "bang" while I was inside the water. I got up and saw my board got sliced by his fin. It was about 8 inches cut on the right side of my surfboard. I was so surprised to see what happened to my unfortunate board and was ready to shout at that surfer. But, I calmed down even though I was super mad inside. If that fin had hit my head instead underneath the water, I would have probably died instantly, making me the 1st fatality of the south swell this year.
Today, I feel differently while surfing with someone beside me or anyone riding the wave. If you surfers see anyone coming to your way, REMEMBER THAT YOUR LIFE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN RIDING THE BIGGEST WAVE OF YOUR LIFE. Avoid the collision by "DIVING DEEP", because the FINS of any surfboards can cause a big accident or possibly death to your life. Let me repeat this, "Fins Can Kill"!!
I hope this story can help surfers avoid danger, including those who swim nearby the surfers. "Safe Surfing is the #1 priority in the waters". Thank you for reading this story.
